So I was driving the other day, and discovered The Helicopter.
Before I explain, I was just wondering if anyone else on here actually knows of it yet??? 8)

I'm sure someone does..

Haha, nah it's not just an aussie thing!

Sunroof is a good guess, it's the rear windows!

Next time you're driving, throw your rear windows down and hear the chopper! Works best if you're stationary and feel it build up as you accelerate, usually hits fulll chop at about 90-100 km/h.

I've done it in previous cars but it works best in the Lancer, or so i've found so far!

Enjoy!

lol Yeah it can be a bit unpleasant on the eardrums!

The sunroof will do something similar with it all the way open at freeway speed. The airflow will cause the roof panel to vibrate up and down making a helicopter like sound. It doesn't have the same effect on your eardrums though. lol

Even my Montero did that with the rear windows down. I think the same thing will happen in just about any 4 door car with the rear windows down to some extent, depending on it's aerodynamics, since it's due to air pressure fluctuations in the cabin.

I wonder if there is a technical name or an auto industry term for it?
It should be referred to as "The Phantom Helicopter Phenomenon" lol

its Air Pressure Compression lol. your ears pop, and it hurts your ears!
you can buy special side window vents for the Lancer, XxLaNcErGTSxX has them on.
this eliminates the Helicopter Sounds when traveling at speed.

Heard the Chopper yes - I dropped them down the other day to let out some heat, to help the A/C, and was blown away when I couldn't here the music, and my ears started to hurt....

Just keep the windows up, I say!!!!

You gotta love the excellent climate control system on them....

I am so doing this - I've been trying to pop my ears for a week and a half (I dunno, I've been yawning, equalising, everything, they just WONT pop!)

Mattigins wrote:hell yeah! oi does anyone else smell burning when u have it on the hottest?

It is just a heating element, like a toaster, so if it's the first time you've cranked up the heat, I'd suggest you would smell some 'burning'....

But - like Josh said... wtf have you got he heat turned on...?

It's like 30+ C here atm..... LOL
