New NSW combined red light/speed cameras in Sydney

Postby Hecky » Wed Dec 23, 2009 4:29 am

As you all may or may not know, the NSW Government, in all it's money making wisdom, is now installing red light/speed cameras in one.
The first has already gone in at Haberfield. The new signage refers only to “Safety Camera Ahead” and there is only one sign on approach

http://i752.photobucket.com/albums/xx16 ... titled.jpg

It is planned to convert all existing red light cameras and some school zones. The government intends to install 200 over the next four years. The below list has the first 50 locations.

More information is available on the RTA website at:

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/sp ... tycameras/

and at:

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/sp ... _faqs.html

So don’t speed up to go through the traffic lights Well, you shouldn't be speeding anyway! :) ) . If you avoid the red light camera you will still be done for speeding.

I thought the combined speed/red light cameras were only meant to get on speeding in addition if you trip them off by going thru the reds. Should read up on that.

I recall correctly, quote from SMH;

The Roads and Traffic Authority, which be responsible for the new technology, will activate combined red light and speed cameras at four permanent sites, while another five dual-use cameras will be rotated through 25 other locations across NSW

The way I understand it is that the camera has both Red light and speeding functions which are independant of each other?

Hecky is right - it says it in the FAQs (link provided in the original post).

These cameras are also operating in the ACT (for a couple of years now) and I think maybe even VIC.

The RTA FAQ states that all of the new cameras are combined red/speed - while the Herald says only 9 are.... It's not beyond the RTA to sensationalise their speed detection technology, but in this case, I'd err on the side of caution!

Therules were changed recently re: signage for NEW speed cameras - they don't need the 3 warning signs any more hence these "safety cameras" only have one sign as they are new speed cameras and they can detect speed and red light infringements at the same time or just speed when the signal is green. You'd have to check the position of each camera to see which way it is detecting speed, but I guess the moral is not to speed...

We have had them in S.A. for a few years now. They also now photo unregistered car and cars owned by drivers with suspended licences.
This is all good, keeps the taxes up for us good people and slows the hoons down, that gives us car enthusiast a bad name.

Depending what school you are from it's either:

a. cos you're doing the right thing, or
b. cos you're not having a go!

I don't disagree with the FAQ, but it was in the news recently and the govt minister was at pains to emphasis this was wasn't a revenue raising exercise and only a select few would have the speed functionality turned on even tho that are capable of working seperately.
As you know NSW govt is quite sensitive to critisism. nothing worse to annoy an already livid electorate than a "Vote 1 Liberal" card in the form a of fine from a new camera.
I think what a lot of people are missing here is the radar function primarily is to notate the speed the vehicle was doing when running the red light. As per the RTA website, a number of things are recorded.
We aren not getting 200 new speeding camera, that's just typical RTA/police scaremongering. In time as people get pinged from these new 5 fixed speed cameras word will get around which ones are pinging people. :)
