NSW & WA - Double Demerits Long Weekend 2012

NSW & WA - seems we both have long weekends.... initially I thought it was only NSW, but I've been informed that WA is celebrating the Queen's Birthday with double demerits too!!

So for WA - http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western ... 6482397625 - I have no idea if this is for ALL offences or only for speeding and seatbelts like in NSW - so someone from WA might want to correct me.

Just a reminder to our NSWelshman - it's Labour Day (a holiday to celebrate working by not working! - only in 'strya! ) long weekend - so with that comes DOUBLE DEMERITS as usual. The DD are only for speeding and seatbelt offences.

So please be aware of your speed and buckle up.
Also drive more carefully as other drivers think it's "drive 10km/h under the limit long weekend" which infuriates other drivers who then go ducking and weaving thru lanes to get around these clowns.

As far as I am aware just speeding and seatbelts.
Of course I assume if you get caught by one of those nasty dual red light/speed camera, where they measure your speed when running a red light, you'll get demerit points for the red light offence and double demerit for the speeding component, (if you were speeding thru the red light).

If you did a nice safe speed running the red light, then that's nice a safe and you only get normal demerits for running the red light.

It applied to red light, saftey, speed and mobile cameras as well...

I dont think the saftey cameras do both, its either one or the other I thought?... When they first came out that was the speil they gave...
ACT on the other had you get done for both... My facts are old though!

Funny you say that Pete, I was driving to Silverwater this morning, a guy in a 4WD was doing 80kmph in the right lane in a 100kmph zone on the M4... Why,, there was an unmarked police car next to him and he was affraid to pass him.. I tooted the horn and he finally moved, I waved at the cop as I drove past him!
He was doing between 80-90kmph behind a truck, just incase you thought I was speeding!

"Safety Cameras" were vague in their wording intentionally, as some did red light ONLY detection (like the old wet film cameras being replaced) and some did dual function, which would do red light offence with speed detection (so you cop two offences in the one hit) and speed offence detection during green lights.

As for the double demerits, pretty sure the specific red light offence does not double up on long weekends. Strictly seatbelt and speeding as that's what the police are targeting as being a bigger evil than any other road offence....

Cause i've always assumed the all demerit incurring offences are just automatically doubled... Didnt figure that restrictions apply, didnt bother researching it either... I just try to be more aware and drive by the book in all aspects and not gamble in any way.

This is from our Daily Bulletin that went out this morning. Bear in mind that my workplace is very road safety conscious, as we drive up Coalfields and Gastaldo Road - two of the worst in WA for road deaths.

The double demerit point initiative was introduced during the Easter break in 2002. Since its introduction there has been a reduction in car crashes during double demerit point periods.
Double demerit points apply to drink or drug driving, speeding, failure to wear a seat belt or child car restraint and carrying passengers in the open load space of a vehicle (such as utilities, trucks and panel vans).
This double demerit point period runs from midnight Thursday leading into Friday, 28 September, until midnight Monday leading into Tuesday, 2 October
