Come again? Did you have plates showing when you were supposed to or didn't you? sorry your statement has confused me.
If you didn't and you should've, then you got off lightly. Tail between your legs, pay the fine, you got off easy. Otherwise, push the matter further.

I always drive with my P plates up, there's no reason not to
The officer showed me the tyres indicator to "prove" he did his job effectively and found something wrong on my car as he promised me he would. The indicator was just on the line, perhaps it was 1mm within being legal but I told him this and he didn't care and I'm not stupid enough to get into a heated argument with an already pissed-off traffic cop

I'm not sure about the legality of the fine he issued Graham but if your tires are that worn PLEASE replace them ASAP.
Just FYI everyone.
Whilst the min 1.5mm thread across the tire contact patch is "legal" it is by no means " safe".
This section from the Tire Bible--
Actually it's wise to change your tires before you get to the wear indicator, as by this point, the effectiveness of the tire in the wet is pretty limited, and its grip in the dry won't be as sharp as it was when new. In 2006, Auto Express magazine in the UK did some pretty rigorous testing on "legal" tires. They are campaigning to have the legal minimum in England increased from 1.6mm up to 3mm. Their reasons are backed up by testing : at 1.6mm, despite still being perfectly legal, the stopping distance is increased by 40% in the wet over tires that have 3mm of tread left. They performed the test using the same car, under the same conditions with the same driver. The only thing that changed was the tires. The Fifth Gear TV program performed a graphic demonstration of the problem by equipping two cars with different tires. The lead car had 3mm of tread left, the trailing car had 1.6mm. The cars were driven at 50mph at a distance of 3 car lengths apart - not safe, but representative of the real-world. When the lead driver performed an emergency stop, the trailing driver reacted nearly instantly, but despite years of training and an ABS-equipped car, he slammed into the lead vehicle still doing 35mph.

I FIND YOUR LACK OF FAITH DISTURBING......
Graham,
I have to fine people in my job, (not a copper)
argue the point that his writing is barely legible and that he has to write so it can be read !!.
in other words, not cursive writing. I got no idea what department he's from with that crap.
point number two.
If you report him, tell them he was just trying to yellow sticker you and found nothing exept a bald tyre, so he had no reason for his attitude and is a far cry from a proffesional police officer

I won't bother fighting the fine if it's legitimate, it probably isn't worth it
by the way, my girlfriend said she saw you at work last week lol

I think everyone young while on their P's should go out and buy a mini tape recorder with a microphone, and when you get stopped by a cop, tape it to the inside of the door so they can't see it, and then open the window to talk to the copper. If you had it on tape that he was harrassing you by saying "I'm gonna go all out to get you for something" and speaking to you like you are some sort of low-life, then this is admissible in a court room as unlawful behaviour on the part of the copper. Just a thought!

Catch is you can get in trouble for recording secretly. It's why telemarketers and telstra say: "This call may be recorded for training purposes."
