Always so negative Blakey, and that's just plain not true. You can arrange the sale of personalised plates wherever you like. You can put a notice up at the corner shop if you want, so long as you do the transfer of ownership through the relevant body. My friend is an investor in all sorts of weird stuff (a silver baron mainly) but buys and sells plates on the side. He has bought and sold many on eBay.

Also might like to drop these companies a line and tell them their business is a fraud:

http://www.mrplates.com.au
http://www.numberplatesforsale.com.au

Basic point is that you shouldn't spout stuff as facts, unless you know it's a fact. Probably the biggest issue with internet forums.

As far as I know in NSW you can not sell basic personlised plates like CHU-887 (cost $90 per year).

But you can sell premium personlised plates like CHUBB (cost $440 per year).

Of course the rta makes it worth their while and charge the new owner an absolute fortune to transfer the plates over the the new car. The biggest transfer rate I have seen is for those really old plates that are just a number like 5 or 124, the nsw rta slaps you with a change over fee of more the $5000.

I had custom plates on my Gemini coupe in Tassie. They were TI3VOM (write it on a piece of paper and hold it up to a mirror). They got a lot of interest and questions by other drivers.

QLD transport says you can sell your personalised plates how you choose, as long as it's legitimate.
