Is the 10 year powertrain really that much of a grab? Does anyone really buy a brand new car these days with an expectation of still owning the same car 10yrs later?
The detail of the 3/5yr transferable warranty is surely more of a draw?

True bunnishiwa, for those who don't mod and want to preserve their cars as original as possible, 10 yrs is a loong warranty and peace of mind for unexpected failures.

Probably more than you think, especially with older people - but I agree, to me the 5yr comprehensive warranty is more important than the 10yr powertrain. I would say the 5yr warranty is critical to a lot of buyers, whereas the 10yr is much more about marketing.
You could crudely split new car buyers into three groups:
1) Those that turn over cars every few year, in which case the warranty from any manufacturer will suffice.
2) Those that keep a car for around 5 years, updating as their needs change, means change, or the car starts to age.
3) Those that buy a car and only update out of necessity, having run it to its death.
Obviously the 3rd lot get the main benefit of the 10yr, but for those of us in group 2, its nice to know that if you end up keeping the car longer than expected, or perhaps after 4-5years you buy an additional car and keep the other as a second car, then at least you are covered for any big-time problems.
The 5yr warranty I feel is really critical as everyone benefits. Group 1 can sell their car with a couple of years of warranty on it, group 2 are covered for the life of ownership and can sell it with warranty if they flick it before 5 years, and group 3 get the peace of mind.
Good points you have there, with me I don't have a plan on when i change my cars so the ten year warranty benefits me in case I do keep a car longer than expected. 5 year benficial of you regularly change cars, however if your always changing cars your financially disadvantaged (unless you have a company car) by the depreciation factor, so evey 3-4 years you have to fork out at least 15k to buy a new car? Dosent cost 15k to get a new motor ?? So i don't really know what's the best way.
I had a bad experience with subaru engine after 80,000 km with piston slap.
Subaru would not repair because it was just out side the time warranty. Yes the car can and will do another 200,000 km without failing, however slap will only get worse and it is accelerating the wear . It is embarrassing noise for what was a otherwise fun car.
Mitsubishi standing by their product was a key differentiator in my mind, and my protest against subaru australia's lack of support for a fully dealer serviced car.

The 10 year powertrain warranty wouldn't sway me from one brand to the other, but the difference between a 3 yr and 5 yr warranty is definitely an important factor when purchasing a car for me.
