Import Question

Postby Raijin » Sun Jan 03, 2010 7:14 pm

Ok this might be a noob question but I'm going to ask it anyways.
Is it true it is illegal to import cars from Japan that have previously been released in the Australian car market? (in order to protect domestic industry)

If I was single and not trying to start a family and get another investment property, I would.

I'm pass that stage of my life and I missed the boat.

You my friend on the other hand have EVERY opportunity to and you know I'll help any way I can.

Actually, I believe they have changed to law recently to prohibit imports of such cars that are available and sold domestically at this point in time.

Don't quote me there, I just heard it.... wanted to import a particular car (relatively new) that is now sold here..... for the JDM goodness, but was told it wasn't possible any more :(.

There are quite a few rules regarding the importing of cars. See here: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/ ... index.aspx

I'll try and find the list of cars eligible under the SEVS rules.

Edit: here is it: http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/sevs/sevsindex.htm

You can import any car into australia with a CAMS licence for race use. Otherwise the car has to be on the SEVS list of approved vehicles.

You also need to have the vehicle complianced in aus and it cannot be majorly damaged, and has to have new tyres that are ADR compliant.
