Postby bd-850 » Sat Nov 14, 2009 12:53 pm

well as the subject says Sat Nav on iPhone, who has downloaded a Sat Nav app onto their iPhone, im looking at doing it, but was wanting to know if you need the internet running on the phone for it to work and if there are any hidden charges?

i dont have it myself but have looked into it a fair bit. The satnav apps (tomtom, sygic and navigon) are designed so that no data is used once you have downloaded the app. All maps are stored on the phone. The only data you might use is when your phone initially connects to the satellites and uses A-GPS to get a faster fix.

you should be right then.

if your phone cant access the net then the app wont use it.

i did my research on whirlpool forums and a fair few people have emailed apple and gotten full refunds for satnav apps that didnt work properly

but since i dont have the app, i cant say for sure whether or not it uses any data. i seriously doubt it does tho. dedicated satnav units certainly dont

Hey,
I have both the iPhone navigation apps from Sygic and TomTom,
Once you've purchased and downloaded them on your computer you can sync them onto your iPhone 3G/3GS and use them as intended; they don't use any data as all maps are stored onboard :)

IMHO, In this point in time, I'd go with the Sygic app over TomTom, it's just so much more easier to use

hope i helped :)

Try before you buy method: Jailbreak! But I'm not sure if they have the navigation software cracked :\

There are other apps that say they connect you to gps. I tried such but the thing is that the iPhone doesn't have blue tooth, it uses the network to locate and triangulate and tell u where u are. Reason I know is because I go off road where there is no 3g and found that the supposedly gps app, did not work, where as my actual gps tracked my move

Hrmm WallyD, the iPhone 3g and 3gs do have a built in GPS chip, although as mentiloned before, it uses the cellular network to triangulate its position to achieve a faster GPS lock.

I have read the forums and there has been many reports how the iPhone has trouble maintaining GPS lock whilst driving. Because of this, companies like Tomtom have even released an iPhone dock which has its own GPS chipset built in to complement the iPhone one for use with its navigation system.

For me personally, i haven't bothered purchasing GPS software for my iPhone, as i have ordered a brand new HTC HD2 to play around with :D
