Really not surprised.
Thing is 10 years ago, the car would have been deemed somewhat safe, but safety technologies in cars as standard today have increased so much since then. So the bar has been raised and as a new comer to the market they gotta play catch up.
It's like the Korean cars entering the market last decade, compare where they were and where they are now.
Only time will tell if the Chinese manufacturers can make the same successful steps in our market.

They had one of those Chery J1 things in the middle of the shopping centre trying to flog them today. They have a funny new car smell, are rather ugly and have a combined fuel economy of 6.7L/100km. They may be cheap but use way more fuel than the Mazda 2. They're cheap and nasty. The $19990 SUV thing was pretty horrid too.
lets jsut say im chinese and im not proud.....
the chinese car industiy would benifit greatly if they dont try to achieve something over night, by that i mean copying someones design and skimping on safty. Honestly, if you design a car thats gonna get a 1 star rating, dont release it.
thke your time, get the safty and styling right. im mean they can shoot a man to space, you can make a car.

I think it is more that they are built to a price point.
They want to launch a car at $11k, so they have to skimp.
Unfortunately safety features are probably the most expensive items to put into a car, so they are the first to go to build to a price point.
I am sure if Chery wanted to market the car at $14k then they could make it a lot safer.
Like Blade888 says look at Korean cars today. They are better built, safer but are also more inline price wise with cars built in other parts of the world. Back when they first launched they were cheaper, more basic and not as safe.
Personally, I would not buy one, and would not allow any of my family to. But they will be successful here because a lot of people do not think of the safety aspect and just see the cheap price tag.

I personally don't like it and will never consider getting one... but that's just me personally... I think for other people it's good to have options..
If a person has only $11,000 to spend maybe that person might be better off getting this car rather than a second hand car, which might even have less safety features to add to that they will probably get more value in total automotive features as well.
People who drive around in 15-20 year old cars (which we can all agree most are dangerous on the road) might suddenly decide "hey maybe I can upgrade now cause I might be able to afford this".
But ofcourse if it was me I'll just find a way to come up/save up for 2-3 grand more and get something better.
