Insurance question if anyone knows.

Postby jolly_tas » Fri Dec 17, 2010 11:33 am

Yesterday a friend had her car damaged by a couple of young kids and a baseball bat - just a random attack as another three cars in the street were also taken care of. Anyway, her car is a 2005 Nissan Micro under an extended Nissan warranty. She rang Nissan about getting it fixed before Christmas and was told they could get the parts but not repair it (windscreen, and both door mirrors) in that time. So she suggested that she buy the parts and take it elsewhere to be repaired.

This next bit is what gets me. Nissan told her that by doing that she would void her extended warranty on the whole vehicle. I can understand losing warranty on the parts being replaced but surely that shouldn't void her entire warranty.

Going by that, anybody who gets anything repaired on their Nissan ie body repair, stone chip etc voids their warranty if it wasn't done through a Nissan dealer.

Can anybody shed some light on this?

I hope Mitsubishi isn't the same.

Shouldn't this be 'warranty question'? :P

And that sounds stupid. How would they even know repairs had been made if you didn't tell them.

And I know nothing about Nissan but our warranty is per part so you only void the warranty on what you mess with or what your work/mod breaks.

But I've read a few cases of Mitsu dealerships trying to say you can't get an exhaust etc cos it'll void the whole warranty. Its scare tactics.

Edit: Although, if the dealership says that, they'll probably follow through. So, try going elsewhere.

Factory warranty won't be effected.

The extended warranty could be. That's the problem with extended warranties, they can make up their own conditions regarding only getting repairs/services at their dealerships else you void it.

that is why they aren't worth the paper they are written on ;)

I call bullshit. Get get to call Nissan Customer Care (Head Office) and explain the situation and see what they say. Sounds like scare tactics on a poor girl by the dealer so they get the job so they can charge labour. :)

I have never liked the extended warranty, from my past experience half the things arnt even covered in the extended warranty. With the warranty that Mitsubishi offer, there's no need to get the extended warranty.

I hope everything works out for
You

Thanks for the input guys. Nissan have taken pity on her and are squeezing her car in to have it done before Christmas. Still no clarification on the warranty side of things but I think like most of you, extended warranties are a waste of money.

Thanks again.

Why would physical damage to the vehicle be covered under warranty? Shouldn't this be an Insurance job?

Car dealerships can offer Nissan / Toyota etc branded insurance underwritten by a major company...

Generally one of the add ons when you buy a new car.
Love that car!
