VW are very nice, having come from an Eos previously, the materials are first class, there is a resounding solid "thud!" when closing the door (as opposed to the hollow "clunk" when closing the Lancer) and interiors are first class, though I have heard of quite a few quality issues recently, in particular turbo and engine failures....

Having said that, VW have announced that they 'might' bring the Scirocco over here, which is sweet. If they bring the Scirocco R, the line starts behind me... :D

Downsides for the Polo GTi at the moment:

1. Torsion beam rear suspension
2. Smaller rear seat and boot space (than CJ)
3. Engine and DSG reliability unknown

Otherwise, it's indeed bang-for-buck! With the RA fetching $40+K and the new Focus ST still far away, it's seriously worth considering.
