The dealer can always take the new parts out and just charge labour.
That would be reasonable as that is all that was required.

HELP!!!

I would put money on they could not fix the problem so came to the conclusion it must be the ECU.
Ordered new ECU and fitted thinking it would be the problem.
It did not fix it so replaced the after market rear lights.
Now every thing is working, but they have had the car all week and wasted a lot of time and ordered a new ECU.
To make themselves look like they know what they are doing they charge the customer for all the labour and parts including ECU. This way they make more money and do not have to return parts which probably came from Japan air freight.
They hope the customer does not realise all this.
Unfortunately for Aaron there probably is not another Mitsubishi dealer in Broken Hill and the one he went to does not have experienced this problem before.
Aaron I would be talking to the dealer and let them know you know about the rear lights and the resistors. If they try and charge you for the ECU and ridiculous amount of labour threaten to contact Mitsubishi head office.

For the specific fault code the ECU gives for that error (not readable by your regular OBD fault code reader) the troubleshoot procedure they follow, as outlined in the service manual, takes them through various diagnosis steps, then if all else doesn't work, replace ETACS ECU.
They followed correct procedure, however since the cause of the fault was an aftermarket part, that voids the warranty on that. Hence the charge.
So they should charge for labour times, but not the ETACS as that was not faulty as it turns out.

So here's what's puzzling me, you're telling me a passive device (i.e. one that responds to signals rather than an active one that sends out signals) such as Rear lights were the fault? They caused the ECU to fail? Something doesn't quite add up.
If lights cause the ECU to fail, something is wrong with the ECU not the lights. And if the ECU is faulty, shouldn't that be covered by your 5 yr Mitsu Warranty?
Me thinks your dealership mechanic is trying to make some money.

if the lights weren't working did you ever try turning the plug around in the socket? as they are LED so they only turn on when the current flows in a certain direction. you ecu said a problem cause there where no taillights signal returning. when replaced new ecu and old taillights fixes problem as signal is returned. as the current can get through.
that's my thoughts anyway. also believe you are being ripped off on warranty. as they haven't proved the ECU is faulty or the lights where the cause.

Waiting for a bill from mitsu cuz they had my car for ova a week trying to fix the LED tail light problem with the ASC warnings... A week later they realise its the lights after theyve replace brake switchs evryfin through to a new ECU and cuz my lights are aftermarket guess who gets the bill!!!
AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH
As the original post states the only issue was the ASC warning light coming on.
Aaron has done the correct thing and taken the car straight to the dealer.
They took over a week, replaced a shit load of parts and blame the led rear lights.
So they said not covered by warranty!
