Private Number Plates QLD

Postby Lancer1993 » Tue Jan 20, 2015 12:10 pm

So I wanted to transfer the normal number plates from my old Lancer to the CJ, mainly because it's a number I've had for some time and thought it would be an easy swap. Pay a small fee and I'm done, not so easy as it turns out and because of a stupid technicality I can't do it.

Normal number plates can only be made into private ones and transfered to another car if in the same name. My old CC is just in my name the new CJ is in two names.

Now as far as I can tell I can still make the old number private to keep it and it will cost just $44 basically to hold that number in my name to use on any future car I own, that is in just my name.

Has anyone in QLD (or other states) come across this before or had a similar situation?

Can you transfer the CC into two names first then do the plate swap?

The rego has lapsed on the CC so it's a much more expensive prospect to do that as I'd have to pay the rego as well.

I'd double check that, my GF has her personal plates on the VRX which is in my name

Personalised plates? He's talking about normal, everyday government issued plates... Kinda a pointless exercise, but each to their own I guess.

Private Plates are normal plates converted so you own them, costs $44.

Personal Plates are plates you choose but can cost thousands to buy.

I just want to keep the number I've used for years.

ok...
whatever floats your boat, never heard of it before is all and still can't really see the point. I've had about 15 cars over the years, can remember most of the plates, never had the urge to keep them though

Difference is I've had this plate over 15 years.

Might need to jump on it then, pretty sure once the rego is cancelled after not being renewed after 90 days or whatever it is, the plates are gone forever and can't be re-used. Hence why you need to get a RWC and new rego for a car too far out of rego after running out.

Yes it's 90 days, which means I have until early March.

If I had $1k I could just let them laps then jump on the number as Private Plates. But for that money I'd rather get something else more personalized.

I've been trying different combos on their site but not much is coming up I like... but right now I'd rather spend the money on new wheels.

Getting personalised plates would just be easier... then they really are yours to keep. Plus you can make a combination from just $495 I believe.
