Synoptic Situation: A vigorous monsoon trough extends from the southern Gulf of Carpentaria to the tropical coast. At 10 am AEST, a tropical low was located on the monsoon trough near Karumba, over the eastern Gulf Country. The low is moving slowly towards the south-southeast and is expected to continue in this direction today before moving in a more southeasterly direction during Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding is expected over the eastern Gulf Country, Peninsula district and east coast districts north of St. Lawrence, extending to the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders tonight as the low moves inland. Scattered 24 hour totals in excess of 200mm are likely.
Locations that may be affected include Weipa, Normanton, Georgetown, Cairns, Innisfail, Ingham, Townsville, Ayr, Bowen, Proserpine and Mackay. Several 24 hour totals over 300mm have been recorded in the North Tropical Coast district to 9am. Other 24 hour totals over 200mm have been recorded in the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays districts to 9am.
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams in these districts; see www.bom.gov.au/qld/warnings Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:
- Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
