Brake specialist in Melbourne

Postby PYLee » Thu May 26, 2011 12:35 pm

As topic, anyone know any good ones in melbourne ?

My brakes started to have grinding sounds when coming to a stop , like metal on metal so i thought it was the brake pads that were gone but when i took them out to check , they have alot more to go so i decided to re-grease them and put them back.

First few drives were alright but now it's back again so i'm thinking that the rotors might need machining , hopefully not replacement :(

Not a lot of places do brake disc machining. Also, grinding doesn't necessarily mean it needs machining.

If you want a brake machining specialist. Take your brake discs to SuperStop Brakes in Mont Albert.

What sort of vibration are we talking about? Is it a vibration through the steering wheel? Or through the brake pedal?

Nearly every mechanic I've ever known does disc machining it's a standard automotive practice. Try any brakes plus dealership, kmart tyre and auto it's not a big deal at all you don't need a brake specialist.

Actually, it's more industry practice now Rob to change over discs rather than machining them. It's cheaper, quicker and has less risk (risk being customers complaining about vibrations because it wasn't machined well :) ).

I have recently also come across a franchise called ABS Brakes. They do brake machining as well. Just take off the discs and send it to them and they'll machine it. Be sure to measure to see if it is legal to machine though (by legal I mean, if you machine them they will not become undersized) :)

it vibrates on the steering wheel when you press on the brakes, but when you accelerate its fine..

Correct me if I'm wrong here mechanics... I believe that you have got a wheel balancing issue (scalloping on your tyres) rather than brake shudder.

Brake shudder is felt through the brake pedal when braking. Steering wheel shudder is felt because of the wheels not being balanced properly, hence high and low spots in the tyres and causing shudder :)
