Broadband Speeds in VIC

Postby ofey » Wed Jul 06, 2011 12:17 pm

Just keen to see what the rest of you in VIC are getting for Broadband speeds.

What's a reasonable speed for ADSL2+?
As per the graph below, theoretically, ADSL2+ is supposed to be able to support up to 24Mbps:

Image

So I had to check my distance from the exchange:

Line of Sight: 1404 m
Estimated Cable: 2176 m
Estimated Attenuation: 31
Estimated Maximum Speed: 12666

then head over to Speedtest.net for the speed test:

Here's mine->

Is it reasonable at all that I'm getting barely half what I'm supposed to be getting?

BTW, I'm on TPG's ADSL2+ Unlimited 24x7~ (A$29.99/mth) with home phone (A$30/mth)

I'm on Internode ADSL+, approx 1.5-2k's from the exchange and my speed is approx 5500, which would seem about right.

You sure your exchange is ADSL2+ enabled? Mine isn't and I'm getting almost identical speeds to you

I swear there's something wrong with Melbourne Speeds. Sure dubdocker is up to 8Mbps but that's still dreadfully slow for ADSL2+

I'm on TPG as well, but I'm in SA.

That definately looks too slow for ADSL2+ ofey.
It does vary from day to day though so try a couple more times to see if it gets better.

The other day I got a speed of 10.something and I just have ADSL (maybe +). I can't reproduce it now though and am getting 5s now.

You should probably contact them to find out whats going on. At least your price is good.

Please do not use speedtest.net as a benchmark. They're indicative and not at all consistent or scientific. I have to occassional deal with techno cripples who insist their 100 Mbit/s is not getting full speed.
You have to remember a lot of the Ookla affiliated speed test servers are voluntary, and do not necessarily have oodles large backhaul links to support multiple people testing at the same time, so it's really a lottery if you hit the server at the right time and get "appropriate" results....

Yes, in theory if you're plugged in directly to a DSLAM port on the DSLAM itself before you hit the IDF frames in the exchange. Real world, if you live across the road from the exchange, 20 Mbit/s.

Also depends on your wire guage and a heap of stuff....

Ofey, post up your full stats, attainable line rate, noise margin and I'll have a look. Also are you naked or LSS?

here are my stats... :P

*puts geek hat on*

I like to know what's going on...

my SNR
Image
My noise margin - yes I have some interference on a frequency, possibly an FM radio station?!
Image
number of bits I can squeeze per tone/carrier frequency.

@customundo: Do you have a spare ADSL2+ modem which I can borrow to see about my line?

sorry I haven't got a spare. I'm using a LAN cable but still shouldn't be THAT much of a difference!
