If gauges in the A pillar were a big enough issue with regard to defectability then custom A pillar speaker mounts would be as well.... surely?

what kind of speakers are you gonna put in your A pillar? its only really big enough to fit a tweet, and you can just recess it in the pillar so it would be no issue at all.
there is no need to have a midbass in your pillar so close to your head, unless they are directional speakers. but, you would be better off just buying better larger midbass to stick in your door.

I have, however, seen SQ competition installs with a 3-way set of splits where the tweet and a small (2" or 3") mid are mounted in the A-pillar and a 6" mid-bass is mounted in the door.
Part of the judging criteria in SQ is positioning of the front Stage on an X, Y & Z axis. Optimum stage position comes down to speaker placement.
Completely off topic so that's probably enough...
