Just dropped my car off this morning to get a service at the dealer and he informed me that the RTA have now changed their rules regarding number plate positions. If you do not already know I have my plate mounted to the left of my lower grill. The head mechanic this morning informed me that if my plate was not in the manufactures original position that he could not pass my car for rego, and if I was caught on the road I will be up for $220 fine.
I have not had time to actually find this new law on the web but I was told the RTA and police are looking at being very hard on this in the future.

You would think their time would be better spent getting the unsafe s**t boxes of the road, but I guess a number plate that is not in the manufactures position is a bigger threat to other roads users ????? WTF.

Possible new Number Plates Law for NSW

I guess you have to draw the line somewhere. I've seen people with their numberplates on their dashboard because they don't want to mess up the front of their cars. Probably works out a lot easier to force people to just leave them where they are.
That said, I sure hope that doesn't spread to QLD

He said it had to be mounted where the dealer fitted the plate, so evo 8 and 9 can be side mounted because the dealers fitted it there standard. I guess good luck to people with modded front bumpers who can not mount the plate where it was at stock.
Once again I ask what is the issue with the old law must be visible from a 45 degree angle 20meters from the front.

That's interesting, considering the front plates are generally where you get the most flexibility... Have seen MX-5's with stickers or magnetic number plates.
Plus, cameras take the image from the rear anyway if I'm not mistaken... Otherwise motor bikes would need to have a front plate.
Anyway, it's all a ploy to screw people out of more money IMO... Without a doubt, NSW is the Nanny state in Australia... Too many speed cameras, red light cameras, unsigned "safety cameras"... Not to mention they rip us all hard on rego costs & custom plates...

This.
And you say they should concentrate on getting s***boxes off the road... But in many ways laws like this exist so they have an initial reason to pull over the s***box in the first place and inspect it.
Its not fair on us though. Haven't seen anybody moving their plate to try and hide it, just for aesthetic reasons.
WA doesn't have compulsory inspections though unless you get yellow stickered...
Just got this from the RTA website road users handbook. Section 6 page 156. Doesnt seem to mention where is needs to be placed, seems to be as long as it is within the mentioned parameters you should be right...My guess is that as long as this is from the official RTA publication, they cannot pick you up for having a number plate moved within legal criteria.

Number plates
Number plates on the vehicle you drive or own must be:
• Issued by the RTA.
• Able to be seen and read clearly from anywhere within a 45 degree arc of the vehicle’s centreline, at a distance of at least 20 metres (see diagrams on the right). That means they cannot be hidden by anything (such as a tow bar or anything being carried). If you carry bicycles on a bike rack which hides the rear number plate on your car in any way, you must either move the rear number plate to a position where it can be clearly seen or buy a special bike rack number plate to attach to the bike rack. A bike rack number plate has the same number as your car’s number plates, and can be ordered from motor registries
or by calling 13 22 13.
• Clearly readable – not dirty, worn or damaged.
• Given back to the RTA after the registration has expired.
The rear number plate must have a light so that it is clearly visible at night.
It is an offence to:
• Alter number plates in any way.
• Attach a number plate to any vehicle other than the one to which it is RTA registered.
• Use a number plate cover that is not flat, clear and untinted (number plate covers
which have lines across them are not considered to be clear).
