Help! New car VIN question

I was wondering if any one can shed any light the Mitsubishi VIN. I'm a bit concerned about a subtle difference.
I've ordered a MY10 CVT Sedan VRX and the VIN just doesn't look right. Usually the VRXs are "STCY5" and the VR & ES "STCY4" (at least from what I have seen).

My new car VIN starts with JMFSTCY4AAUxxxxxx
I'm concerned about the digit 4, I would have thought it should be 5.
I thought it might be engine type but my engine number ends in 4B12 - so it's still a 2.4L.

Has Mitsubishi started using the same chassis as the ES/VR/Ralliart (CY4) with the new VRXs??!?!?

I've been able to decode this, thus far.

These 3 are World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
J = Japan
MF = Mitsubishi

These 5 are body style/feaures;
S = I'm guessing Sedan
T = CVT (N if it's manual)
CY4 = Platform type (includes build/engine type)

A = check digit

A = build year (2010) - 9 = 2009 (the dont use O and I in VIN not to confused with 0 and 1)
U = Plant (Mizushima)

xxxxxx = sequence #

Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm. I always thought that CY4A is the build type for all Lancers including ralliart and CZ4A is the EvoX. That's how the japanese differentiate the lancers. CY4A or Galant Fortis, CZ4A or EvolutionX.

The only CY5A I know of, are the LancerEX that is for China. You sure you have seen VRX with CY5A?

Seen plenty if the online car classifieds are to be believed where dealers quote VIN#s for new/demo cars in stock. Even the aspires are CY5A. Even Redbook says the VRX & Aspire VIN serialisation "should be" CY5A and CY4A is for ES/VR/RX/RA

I've pretty much answered my original question, now what is the difference between a CY4A and CY5A - wheelbase, etc are all identical according to redbook. :?

Both my RA and VRX have CY4A if its CY5A that would be the 2.4L I think

My VRX by the way is a 2L which is why I think the 2L have a 4 not 5

Well at least I'm not going nuts when I said I know they used to be CY5A on the VRX. That tells me it's a manual sedan MY2009. :)

Well that's what I would've thought straight off, but the MY10 is def 2.4L.

Perhaps Mitsubishi are just freeing up redundant code/allocations. As there has been no 2.0L VRX for the last 2 MY series so no need to differentiate between CY4A and CY5A. The only theory I have.

I'm going to ask the service manager on Wednesday when I pick up the car. I'm intruigued. :D

Ok People!

CY4A is all 2L Sedans, including Ralliart

CY5A is 2.4l Sedans

CX4A is 2L Sportbacks

CX5A is 2.4L Sportbacks

CZ4A is Evo X

The JMF prefix is Mitsubishi's code

U is the manufacturing plant

The rest of the prefix is line/production code

The last digits are the body number.

Hmm...

Unless it is a typo on the computer system/dealer contract.

Wait until you pick up the car and see what it has on the body plate.

Mystery solved. Typo on the dealer invoice. It actually is a CY5A. Phew.

Now I have to call my insurance to get the details corrected. Grrr. Then I can go for a decent drive. :D
