It's a great deal actually, but this will soon be on run-out mode as the new one will be out probably mid-late next year. Maybe I'm just not the type who would buy something that's about to be replaced. You might want to check VW's servicing costs as well.

By trading in, one needs to accept that the car will lose about two grand of its real value. Dealers would certainly want to take off even more so their initial offer is about $4,000 less than what the car is really worth. The goal is to keep the trade-in value within what Redbook suggests. If the dealers don't budge, then you shouldn't either.

I am in the motor trade. You have to consider what work needs to go into the car to make it sellable (roadworthy, detail, fix any bumps etc..). Also the dealer has to pay on road costs which vary state to state (in QLD 3% stamp duty, GST, transfer fee, admin fee, rego costs). Once this is all taken into account they need to make money and still have it comparable with the current market, generally dealers try and make a $3,000 profit (but no-one pays full amount). If they drop $2,000 then they are doing all that for only $1,000 which also has to pay the salesperson commission and pay to advertise the car. Basically, try not to go too hard on dealers after all they have a business to run and without them buying car will be a whole lot harder.
