Yes, many places sell them and make you believe they are perfectly legal. However they are not legal at all.
In addition, they are not suited to be installed in lights designed to house halogen globes. Thus not producing a proper beam pattern and causing an enormous amount of glare to other road users.

This is far more an important issue than the colour, in my opinion. 5000 or 6000K, if you do not have the projector lenses then they will just look very bad to the other road users, and will not output onto the road as you would expect compromising your own road vision as well...
6000k globes ARE legit, that is if you are simply replacing the bulbs in your from the factory HID set-up. Any kelvin rating above that is technically illegal although the chances of getting done for 8000k is in my opinion quite low.
On a recent trip up to sydney I was amazed to see two cars driving around with purple HID's in the CBD in just one night... lol. Of course there was hardly any light emitted and its terribly illegal but i guess that doesn't stop them. I've also seen purple HID's here in melbourne, so I think your mate with the camry must have been really unlucky.

Yes, you are quite right. BUT none of these people here are replacing OEM HID bulbs. This is a pure aftermarket setup. Therefore highly illegal.

Unfortunately nobody on this forum cares for that except you and myself
All they care about is f**king colour. ZOMFG IT"S SO BLUE!!
I care. You are not the only ones, i wanted HIDs as well, but after reading all the different opinions, i went out and bought my Philips Xtreme Powers. And they serve me brilliantly. Not as white as my LED parkers but still serves the functionality purpose perfectly.
