single wiper conversion

Postby sloth1 » Thu Oct 22, 2009 9:34 pm

I am interested in doing a single wiper conversion on my ES and was wondering if anyone would know how to do this, or if there is any companies in Aus that could help me out.

I have done some research but am yet to find anything.

Most cars have armature under the vents at the front of the bonnet. A single motor drives the linkages to move the wipers. I am not sure it would be terribly easy to mount the guts of a single unit (like those found in Mercedes cars) into that space, in the correct area for it to work...

I like the idea...

Personally I prefer the 2 wiper system.. or even the system used in some cars like the honda civic. You get more coverage with these systems IMO.

The merc ones... if you look at closely don't really go in a semi circle.. they have this extension to cover more windscreen.. I think..

Milo, do you mean they don't make the full half-circle?

i still think it would be really hard to do....

I like the slim-line wipers, made by Bosch, but they're hard to come by...

I've never even seen a single wiper in action before so I wouldn't know where to begin.
I like the Civic ones how they open outwards
Would look pretty cool & unique when it's done though.

They do a full circle but it gets wonky in the middle for extra coverage. I've seen it in action before.. a bit scary when its on fast mode. It has to sweep faster to cover the same area as 2 wipers.

This is an excellent video on the internal mechanisms...

That vid shows the Merc system working perfectly... They are a bit wierd to watch.

Basically, the process is becasue they are so long (to cover the sides) it shortens itself with that motor/cam as it passes across the middle/top of the windscreen....

Yes but mounting it to a Lancer, in the cavity available, still seems laced in fantasy... Wipers heads are not sexy, but has anyone used/have the slimline versions available? Images on a CJ?

Slimline? Are those the bosch aero wipers that you usually find on the new cars (except mazdas and mitsubishis :P)

Haha, yeah.. exactly! And, if you want to get the exact sizes required for our car, sure they exist, but Supercheap, Repco, et al, do not keep the shorter one in our size (nor do they have it on their ordering systems). So, we are stuck with the passenger wiper being 25mm short or 15mm long, etc.

Anyone have these Bosch or equivalents on their car? If yes, where did you get them, price and any images? Cheers.

I have the Trico neoForm "bem blade" wipers...

As I have said in another thread, they are only made in certain sizes, and the nearest to our CJ ones are 5 or 10 mm bigger than the ones we have stock. Mine work fine, but slightly touch when parked. And moving the armature doesn't help at all as the movement steps are spaced in such a way that it's better left how it is.

I can get pics later when the missus comes home.

I personally think that there are far better and more useful mods which you can do with your $$... the risk of this f'ing up on you when it's raining is so not worth it.

That being said in response to above comments, I also like the Civic wipers. Definitely my favourite. Not a huge fan of the one piece MB one because I feel that it's just not that effective and the damn thing sounds like it's going into overdrive and could explode!
