Okay been reading up on the Alloy Fuel Lids you can buy for the CJ.

Like this...

Anyway I've noticed a big price difference from $80 to around $300, is there a real difference or is it something else to explain the gap?

I did see the thread on the bulk buy attempt, sorry that didn't work out, $50 would be a bargain compared to some prices I've seen on eBay.

Also they appear to be an easy install but are there any ongoing problems as I've heard some are hard to open over time.

Here is one I found on eBay at a good price of about $90 with shipping.

The price has now gone up to about $110 with shipping.

I did a search and couldn't find a dedicated DIY thread on the topic, are they still 'cool' or now tacky? (says the guy with yellow mud flaps)[/img]

I have one installed on mine and i have experienced the issue of it being hard to open.. though an easy fix.

It has something to do when after installation and the lid is not adjusted properly, the latch on the lid that contacts the locking mechanism becomes a bit tight when closed so even if you pull the release lever it takes a number of attempts before it opens.

The fix is to adjust the position of the latch by tightening or loosening the screws/bolts on the hinge side and on the locking side and doing few tests until it opens without fail. It doesn't take long once you get an idea on what you're doing. cheers. :)
