Need to know how to remove the mirror skins as one has some scratches (from the previous owner) on it and I want to paint it.
I've looked online without luck.
Also for my old Lancer I got a Haynes manual, is there on for the CJ?

best to take the whole mirror of the door first by removing the tweeter and unbolting it. The cover comes of with slight force and is tricky. if i remember correctly you need to wrap a fine flathead screw driver in a shop cloth and work open the cover clips from one side and carefully work your way around, there is one or two bigger clips in side which are trickier. If your worried about damaging it i saw some second hand mirror assemblies pretty cheap on ebay, get the one you need and just get that painted and swap the whole unit.

I thought they could be easily removed while on the car. I want to paint them separated from the mirror.
I have noticed how lite the plastic feels, compared to the solid feel of the ones on my CC coupe. Which I upgraded to electric and color coded to the body

Think I just found the solution in this nice PDF.

Looks like you take the glass out first to better access the tabs.
