Front parking sensors

Postby aspir3 » Sun Nov 01, 2009 5:52 pm

My wife is having trouble with scraping the air dam spoilers on parking bollards and curbs. Has anyone fitted or know if fitting front parking sensors will sense items 190 mm from the ground or only solid objects like walls?

I asked the dealer this question aswell (my parking isn't too crash hot either :P ) and he said they don't reeeeally make them for the front but theoretically it should be possible.

I guess it depends where you mount them though

It is probably only a matter of time before someone starts fitting forward facing cameras as well, not just for parking, but for avoiding scraping the bottom of the front air dams when entering driveways/shopping entries etc.

So do many other cars, including Toyota Aurions....

I am not sure how they work though. In reverse ones, they only engage when the car is in reverse - surely the front facing ones aren't beeping and active all the time. Maybe they only make noise when somthing comes within a metre or so of the front...

BEEP BEEP BEEP (Within 1 meter of an object) + peak hour freeway traffic (lucky to go 10km/h sometimes) = mega roadrage :P

I haven't driven a new BMW/Statesman/Aurion so I'm not sure myself but if I'm talking to someone who's got one then I'll be sure to ask them how it works

They only operate at speeds less than 10kmh. They also have a switch to turn them on/off if you don't need them

This is from a M-B:

The ones on ebay work with the brake light. It activates when u press the brake, but as someone said, in peak hour it would drive u nuts.... I gues a switch to turn the front off when not needed would be an easy fix.

The only thing about the ebay units arte that the sensors are biggish. I bought some off ebay for my rears and go ok, but i wouldnt put them in the front.

I also bought some for my mums new car (she broke all for corners of her old one). I was thinking the front and rears for her too, but opted not to for the shear size of them.

I got mine and mums of ebay for around $55 delivered from asia somewhere. Installed myself in about 1/2 hour

I am sure you can contact any third party parking sensor installer - they should be able to do it for you easily. Just need to hook it up to a button probably beside the ASC button.

My bosses Merc has then front and rear, light displays all over the car. Its funny because along the back window you have your light sensors there aswell as the dash for reversing

Definitely would need a switch.

IMO the best system is still the BMW iDrive which shows a radar of the car front/back and also has a switch to turn front parking sensors on/off. Would be nice to see this kind of design spread to other car manufacturers.

TBH the visual radar system is far more useful than a camera because I think the rear view camera just distracts you from using your mirrors as much as you should and it also skews perspectives.
