Postby CjChad » Tue Jul 13, 2010 5:01 pm

hey guys, i just wanna get your opinions on this.
im an apprentice carpenter and have alot of tools that i carry in the car with me. im thinking of getting a small trailor so i can put all my tools in that instead of my boot. has anybody put a towbar on their lancer?

here is a link to the type of trailer im looking at (look at pictures 34, 36 or 48 )
http://www.easytrailer.com.au/gallery.html

all up my tools probably weigh about 100kg - 150kg

thanks

G'day Chad,
It's not like you're towing a boat. Should be fine. My old Dat 200B wagon towed a 6x4 box trailer fully loaded for camping (2 adults, 2 kids) and I still got booked for speeding !!

you will get a performance loss, thats just obvious. but your not planning on racing around the track with the trailer are you :P

i had a tow bar on my VW and had to tow a box trailer full and it managed, slow yes but it managed :P

lol yeh i was not expecting the car to be quicker. just wanted to know how the extra weight could effect the engine and brakes and the car itself etc...

Ron I have not towed in my Lancer.

I have towed in my old car which was very similar to the lancer. Same size, weight and engine and brake power.

It towed a 6 X 4 trailer nicely. When ever towing it will affect your performance. The main concerns are always the braking. Drive accordingly and you will be fine.

Yeah I've towed a 5x8 cage trailer full of everything I own using a 1979 Gemini the weighed 900kg and had tiny disc front and drum rear brakes. I'm pretty sure a lancer will do fine.

you should be right mate, when i had my 2008 VR lancer i towed my dad's 5 metre aluminium boat, fully fueled and 4 people in the car. The wheels would just rub against the wheel wells over big bumps/humps in the road!

It used to be an issue back years ago but modern cars are designed to handle it.

I remember in our old commodore we had to have bigger brakes put on to tow a boat.

As long as your within the weight limit for the car you should be fine, just expect a decent drop in fuel economy.
