Which gauge pod to get?

Postby JaCe » Tue Mar 29, 2011 5:57 pm

Hey all

Currently trying to figure out which mounting solution to use for my boost gauge (AEM 30-4406)

1. Steering wheel pod - $105usd shipped to Sydney from Rexspeed > http://www.rexpeed.net/new2007/product_ ... serial=212

2. RHD gauge pod - $99usd shipped to Sydney from Rexspeed but I'll need to get spacers since my AEM gauge is 52mm I think (rather than 60mm)
http://www.rexpeed.net/new2007/product_ ... serial=190

3. Generic gauge pod - $19aud shipped from eBay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-52mm-2-Gauge ... 648wt_1083

Note: I bought a AEM Part# 30-4406 boost gauge.

Any thoughts? I'm leaning towards cheap and nasty but then the steering wheel pod looks like a great fit.

ps. I didn't attach pictures because I couldn't access imageshack to rescale them/upload them from my work PC.

Hey Jeff,

I'd go for the RHD Guage Pod.
It's well designed and places the gauge aside where you don't need to be looking at it all of the time. Only when you need/want to.
Good for Road Use, Occasional Glance.

The Steering Wheel Pod looks good. but I think it might impair your vision of the Speedo & Tacho, and it's "in your face position" makes it almost impossible to "not notice", even when you don't want to.
Good for Track Use, Constant Look.

My Opinion Only.

Based on looks alone, I like the RHD one the most. :)

tbh , you will never look at the gauge when your in the heat of trackday.

btw , doesn't the greddy informeter show boost aswell ?

Only problem with the RHD pod is the picture doesn't look like it's for RHD cars- looks more like a LHD vehicle's passenger side... which leaves me a bit worried! That, and it's a 60mm whereas my gauge is a 52mm hence I'll need to fit spacers.

The steering wheel pod one looks a lot better IMO except that whilst it won't block speedo/tacho for me at all, what it will do however is block my view of the manual gear display unless I sit up tall (I think). I'll sit down in the car and think about it some more.

ps. Lee- my GReddy screen shows boost but it relies on the ECU to feed it that data. I'd rather have an accurate gauge using an actual sensor on the hose. This way I can also use the GReddy screen to show other things (e.g. temperature).

I've got the pillar mount in my car, quality is good but the double sided tape didn't hold. Secured with stainless bolts. Not a legal mount but looks good. I have an autometer gauge with boost recall cause its not looked at much during track time.

It doesn't hold well? Hmm... not too keen on using bolts/etc to hold it. I'm now leaning towards the steering wheel pod OR the cheap generic one.

Aren't pillar pods illegal?

I like the steering wheel one, but next time you drive, think about if it'll be in the way of the screen, because that would be frustrating. Depends how tall you are/where you sit.

I've got the rexpeed twin pod mounted on my steering rack. It fits pretty well, however it DOES block your view of the speedo and tacho. The single gauge unit should only block your central display, up to about a quarter of the way (depends on high you sit/how tall you are).

I've grown accustomed to the pod being there and hardly notice it anymore, even with the blinking AFR gauge.

I trial fitted an A-pillar pod and, personally, found that it obstructed your view to the right, especially on tight turns.

Anyway, for pics, check out my garage...

Jace, any reason why you didn't go for the extra sensors and adapter on the informeter?

Lets you do boost, oil temp, oil pressure, even seen someone do afr's with it.

im sure you have seen these and im saying you only want one gauge and not more?

http://www.lancershop.com/customer/prod ... 180&page=1

http://www.lancershop.com/customer/prod ... 180&page=1

but by the gauges you got listed,

RHD Pod - i would say blocks vision of the road while driving

Steering wheel Pod - Blocks info screen

(how often you do look at the road compaired to the info screen on your dash?)

Universal Pod - can mount anywhere but looks like you have to screw it in (not a fan of that)

just my 2c

I only have one gauge ... I'm leaning towards the steering wheel pod. Yes it'll block my fuel gauge and my manual gear but I'm not too worried since when I want to see them I can, and if I'm running low on fuel it pops up a bigger warning at the top anyway.

Thinking back to when I'm driving at the track, I don't think I really looked at my manual gear display- rely on the sound more.

I would go steering wheel pod then. Plus I think it would look better. Only because the RHD pod is a different colour to the pillar and would look untidy IMO
