An idea.

Ive been thinking about something.

How hard do you think it would be to make or get a plastic mould/shape made up, so that it can fill in the space before the temperatue dials and after the ash tray.

what im thinking, is getting a mock, carbon fibire look thing, that can fill in that space, but also, set it up, to aux and have it so that i can doc an iphone.

essentially, it is creating an iphone/ipod doc.

i have seen someone on this very forum create a sort of doc for itouch, bt i want to take it one step further, and actually incorporate it into that area.

the idea is to carbon fibre abit of that area and also the "cover area" so it looks like one peice with a purpose made iphone dock.

would look cool, but i havent a clue as to how to go about it.

Thats the custom dock one you were talking about.

I dont know the steps or the ingredients, but you can make a form outa rubber or plastasine or somehting like that, make a form of were you want it to fit then make it outa fibreglass then cover it with carbon fibre sticker but im not sure if it would do the job your looking to do.

yeah, that is the one im referring to, but instead of having in a doc like that, i want it to .... hmm, its hard to explain.

if i get time over the weekend i will sketch something up.

the idea, is with the iphone in place, it will look like its part of the car .... hmm, really hard to explain ...

Do you mean like a full mould to cover up that ashtray area, then your ipod docs in that?

I've seen that idea done beside the handbrake where the cup holders are in a different car. I think the biggest issuse with it standing up would be bumps and stuff. I don't have an Ipod/Iphone so I don't know how strong the charging clip is to say wether it would withstand the harsness of the road

You could mold the ashtray recess if you remove that part of the centre console. Cover it with fibreglass and then get a carbon fibre sticker that matches the interior (if you have an MY09).

Have it sunk into the actual recess if possible so you can still close the cover that is already there.

I might look into this seriously when my ipod cable arrives and is installed as I hate having my ipod loose in the car.

yep along those lines.

a far out suggestion, is there anywhere we could get some cad drawings of the centre console?

if i could, i could actually 3d model what im talking about.

i dont reckon it would be that hard, just need to get it drawn right, i imagine in company that created moulds could come up with something.

I went looking for the thing you want to do. Someone has done it but i cant find it anymore man. It didnt have an ipod doc, it just had guages in that section because i think it was a turboed lancer. Not 100% sure though.

So it has been done. And if i come accross it, ill post it here for you.

And scott, check out the melbourne cruise thread, there is an update regarding the lips

Creating molds for one off products is really really expensive. Not a few hundred $$ expensive either. Think of a number, then x it by 10 or 20 and you'll maybe be in the region.

Better off DIY'ing it for this sort of thing.
