Import duty/tax

Postby nixonx » Tue May 31, 2011 9:26 pm

Hi Guys,

Im looking at importing a set of rims from wheeldude.com which will total around $900US.

Will i need to pay import tax as the price including freight will be over $1000? Or will i avoid it as the cost of the item is less then $1000?

If I remember correctly it's the amount less the postage. It's the value of the item itself that is referred to.

In short, you wouldn't be taxed.

Off topic, but I'm interested in the rims you're importing in. Do share. :)

Regardless of calculations, it's important that the receipt is well presented.

Also stating clearly each item:

Goods =
Description -> Price
Tax -> Price
Shipping -> Price

Also for quarantine purposes you should ensure the tyre guys state BRAND NEW tyres.

It's cost plus shipping you get taxed on the total cost

@El-Diablo:

I can say that's not what happened to me a couple of times. As you know some of our group buys come from the US and Japan. I've had parts come up to A$980 worth and shipping of A$190 and I didn't get any GST slapped on.

It's all very strange.

nope, it is only the value of the goods and not shipping!

Taken from the customs website

Goods with a declared or assessed value not exceeding A$1,000

If your goods arrive in Australia by mail and have a declared or assessed value of A$1,000 or less, the goods may be imported free of duty, taxes and Customs and Border Protection charges, unless they are alcohol products or tobacco products. Apart from alcohol and tobacco products those goods will be cleared by Customs and Border Protection and delivered by Australia Post without you doing anything.

Goods with a declared or assessed value over A$1,000

You will be sent a First Notice by Australia Post if you have imported goods with a declared or assessed value of more than A$1,000...

And before that it states
If goods are received from overseas as mail articles (parcels) — carried by Australia Post and addressed to you — you are the importer of those parcels
