The failure to change gear sounded like the gear shift cable bracket, under the battery area. I've had that unbolt on me before, thats the ONLY thing thats stopped me from changing gear. Ever. And I was the first CJ in Australia to blow the clutch >.< all it did then was extreme high revving no matter what and wierd smell, no gear change problems.

I think this is a selector problem. It might have selected 2 gears therefore locking up the gearbox which caused the clutch to slip and burn.

I would definitely get Mitsubishi to check it out and demand the gearbox is removed for inspection and the clutch replaced. This should all be covered under warranty.
